There’s something magical about getting ready for the red carpet when your makeup and hair team just gets it.

No overthinking. No second-guessing. No trying to force a look that doesn’t feel like you.

For our recent Creative Arts Emmys glam, we had the pleasure of working with one of our favorite clients for the third time in this red carpet capacity. And let me tell you…we are doing this every year regardless of awards or not. 💋✨

When you're creating red carpet hair and makeup, every detail matters.

The dress sets the tone. The hair needs to complement the neckline and silhouette. The makeup needs to photograph beautifully from every angle while still feeling effortless up close.

For this look, we created a sophisticated yet sexy makeup and hair moment that worked seamlessly with her dress and the overall vibe.

The makeup was polished and radiant with just the right amount of definition. The hair brought the sophistication while still feeling modern and sexy.

Nothing was competing with the dress.

You start to understand their face, their features, their style and, perhaps most importantly, how they want to feel.

Makeup & Celiac Disease: Why Gluten-Free Beauty Matters

Because beauty should never come at the expense of feeling good. 💄

As a professional makeup artist, I spend a lot of time thinking about skin, ingredients, formulas, finishes and, of course, which products will make my clients look absolutely gorgeous.

But lately, some of my clients have taught me to think about something else, too: celiac disease and gluten-free makeup.

And I’m sharing this because learning is part of being a great makeup artist. The more I know, the better I can serve the people who sit in my chair.

First things first: What exactly is celiac disease?

Celiac disease is an autoimmune condition in which eating gluten triggers an immune response that damages the lining of the small intestine. Gluten is a protein found in wheat, barley and rye.

And this is not simply a case of, “Gluten makes my tummy unhappy.”

For someone with celiac disease, ingesting gluten can cause real intestinal damage even when obvious symptoms aren't present. The Celiac Disease Foundation notes that people with celiac disease should avoid gluten even if they don't experience symptoms after eating it.

So where does makeup come into the picture?

💋 The lipstick conversation

Here's the part I really want fellow makeup artists—and anyone living with celiac disease—to know:

Gluten generally isn't absorbed through intact skin. The concern with cosmetics is products that can actually be ingested.

And what makeup product goes directly on the mouth?

Yep. Lipstick. Lip gloss. Lip liner. Lip balm.

Basically, the makeup products that have a VIP pass straight to your mouth.

The Celiac Disease Foundation specifically recommends verifying ingredients in lipsticks, lip glosses, lip balms and other cosmetics used near the mouth because they may be unintentionally ingested.

That doesn't mean every person with celiac disease needs to throw out every product in their makeup bag. The National Celiac Association notes that gluten-containing cosmetics applied to intact skin are generally not considered a concern, while products that may be ingested—especially lip products—deserve more attention.

And this is exactly why asking questions matters.

✨ My clients taught me something important

Recently, I've had clients tell me that they have celiac disease and asked me to be mindful about the makeup and lip products I use.

My response?

Absolutely.

Because if a client trusts me with their face, I want them to feel confident that I'm also paying attention to their individual needs.

I've been researching brands and ingredients and looking for products specifically formulated without gluten or wheat. One brand that has come up in my research is ILIA Beauty.

ILIA has a dedicated gluten-free makeup collection and states that its products are formulated without gluten. There is an important distinction, though: ILIA says its Multi-Stick and Soft Focus Finishing Powder are certified gluten-free, while many of its other products are formulated without gluten but are not certified gluten-free because they aren't manufactured in a certified gluten-free environment.

And that distinction is important.

“Formulated without gluten” and “certified gluten-free” aren't necessarily the same thing.

For a client with a medically diagnosed condition, I don't want to make assumptions. I want to ask what level of precaution they need and, when appropriate, check directly with the manufacturer.

🛍️ Other makeup brands worth knowing about

There are several beauty brands that offer gluten-free or wheat-free products, but here's my BIG makeup-artist disclaimer:

Brands can change formulas.

So please don't rely on an old blog post, a random Pinterest graphic from 2017, or something your friend's cousin's makeup artist told you. 😂

Check the current ingredient list and the brand's own gluten-free information whenever possible.

A few brands/products worth researching include:

bareMinerals — The brand currently identifies a number of products as gluten-free, including its Original Mineral Veil and several products in its sensitive-skin collection.

Jane Iredale — The brand provides specific vegan, gluten and wheat information and identifies products that may contain wheat, which makes its ingredient transparency particularly useful when building a gluten-conscious makeup kit.

ILIA Beauty — Offers a dedicated gluten-free collection and clearly distinguishes certified gluten-free products from those formulated without gluten.

Other brands have also been identified by Beyond Celiac as offering gluten-free lip-care options, including Ecco Bella, e.l.f. and Tula, but because formulations can change, always verify directly with the manufacturer before using a product on a client with celiac disease.

🔎 What should you look for on an ingredient list?

When researching cosmetics for a client who needs to avoid gluten, some ingredients and terms worth watching for include:

• Wheat

• Barley

• Rye

• Malt

• Triticum vulgare

• Hordeum vulgare

• Secale cereale

• Avena sativa

• Wheat-derived ingredients

• Hydrolyzed wheat protein

These are examples—not a substitute for professional medical advice or confirmation from the manufacturer. The National Celiac Association recommends reading labels and contacting cosmetic companies when there is uncertainty.

And here's another important reason I don't make assumptions: “clean beauty” does not automatically mean “gluten-free.”

Those are two completely different claims.

💗 Why education matters behind the makeup chair

This is one of those moments when I am reminded that being a makeup artist isn't just about knowing how to blend an eyeshadow or create beautiful skin.

It's about knowing your client.

It's asking:

“What do you normally use?”

“Is there anything I should know about your skin or sensitivities?”

“Are there ingredients you need me to avoid?”

And then actually listening to the answer.

For someone with celiac disease, having their makeup artist understand why lip products deserve extra attention can make the experience feel much safer and more comfortable.

And honestly? Knowing is everything.

I don't expect to know everything about every medical condition or ingredient under the sun. But I do believe it is my responsibility as a professional makeup artist to keep learning, keep asking questions and keep my kit as informed as my artistry.

Because the best glam experience isn't just about looking beautiful.

It's about feeling beautiful, comfortable and cared for while you're in my chair.

💄 A note for my fellow makeup artists

If you are a makeup artist reading this and haven't thought about celiac disease and gluten-free makeup before, consider this your little nudge to do some research.

Start with your lip products.

Review your kit.

Check manufacturer statements.

Know which products are certified gluten-free versus simply formulated without gluten.

And most importantly, don't promise something is gluten-free unless you have verified it.

When in doubt, ask the client what they require and check with the manufacturer.

Because our clients trust us with more than their makeup.

They trust us to pay attention.

And that, my fellow glam people, is a responsibility worth taking seriously—with a little mascara, a good lip and a whole lot of care. 💋✨
